About
The SchoolWAN Project
SchoolWAN is a new project to inter-connect schools in South Africa. We currently have 80+ schools connected to the Wide Area Network. We aim to extend our network and strategy of using cost effective networking technology, open source software and a low cost VPN model to more South African schools.
The project is mainly driven by volunteers and sponsor companies. At the moment most schools connect using outdoor fixed wireless (Wifi) connections, but there are a number of schools that connect with dial-up modems.
As part of the inter-connection of schools we provide email services and local (free) content services. A big part of the project’s strategy is to connect tuxLab computer labs at schools and this forms part of the project’s core open source strategy.
